Assistant Professor of Film Studies (Tenure Track)

Description: Job Description The Film Program of the Department of Communication & Theatre Arts at Old Dominion University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor in Film Studies, beginning in July 2022. The ideal candidate will be a scholar whose work focuses on the intersections of cinema and marginalized communities from either a historical or contemporary vantage point, with either a focus on film production/distribution/industries or reception/exhibition/audiences. Areas of focus might include (but are not limited to) race and cinema, queer cinema, diaspora cinema, and/or ableism and cinema. The ideal candidate would contribute classes to both our undergraduate film studies, media studies and cinema & TV production programs as well as our Master?s degree programs in Lifespan Communication & Digital Media and in the Humanities. Practitioners with creative scholarship that aligns with the above criteria are also welcome to apply. An ability to teach screenwriting, animation, and/or directing classes is desirable, but not required. Type of Recruitment General Public Type of Recruitment General Public Minimum Qualifications - knowledge, skills, and abilities Experience teaching at the university level;Excellent writing and communication skills;Demonstrated scholarly/creative research potential, and;Demonstrated commitment to mentoring non-traditional students and teaching at a minority-serving institution. Minimum Qualifications - Education or training PhD in Film Studies or related field or MFA in cinema production, animation, screenwriting or related field with research and/or creative scholarship clearly focused on marginalized communities. Minimum Qualifications - Special licenses, registration or certification Preferred Qualifications Ability to teach courses in two or more of the following: film history, film theory, film genres, film aesthetics, national cinemas/international cinemas, entertainment industries, media audiences, screenwriting, animation, and/or directing;Experience teaching in both face-to-face and online formats;Experience teaching graduate students;Demonstrated record of publication and/or festival/theatrical exhibition;Experience in applying for external funding opportunities;Ability to collaborate with colleagues within across departmental disciplines in communication, dance, and theatre.
